Earth Day began in 1970, and today it is celebrated in 175 countries by about 500 million people. Around April 22 every year, Japan's largest citizen event, "Earth Day Tokyo," is held in Yoyogi Park.
Earth Day Tokyo began in 2001. As an occasion to "think about our planet and take action," this event features a wide variety of initiatives for creating a sustainable, cooperative society. The food area is dedicated to eco-friendly eating, and various artists take part in an Earth Day Concert. Organizations focused on a range of contemporary issues will have booths, workshops for children, and other offerings for visitors of all ages.
